Nikolai Grishin was born in Moscow in1921. He attended the art studies faculty of the Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History (IFLI) in 1940–1941. After the end of the Second World War Grishin was enrolled in the graphic arts faculty of the Surikov Institute as a third-year student. Upon graduation in 1949 the young artist soon found his book illustrations in great demand. Although he was also known as a virtuoso watercolorist, the public at large saw his watercolours for the first time in 1989, four years after his death. Museums, including the State Tretiakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, purchased more than forty watercolours of Grishin at that exhibition.
